Professor Dr. Sadeka Halim took charge as the the first female Vice chancellor of Jagannath University on Thursday.
She took charge at the VC office of the university at 4:00 am on Thursday.
The university teachers, employees along with Jagannath University Journalists’ Association members, welcomed the new vice chancellor with flowers at the time.
Earlier on Thursday, Professor Dr Sadeka Halim of the Department of Sociology of Dhaka University was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Jagannath University (JnU) for the next four years.
Secondary and Higher Education Division of Education Ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard on the day.
In line with the approval of President Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu, also the Chancellor of the university, Prof Dr Sadeka Halim has been appointed as per Section 10 (1) of the Jagannath University Act, 2005.
President , Mohammad Shahabuddin, may cancel the appointment any time if needed.
Sadeka Halim was the first elected female dean of the Dhaka university social sciences faculty. She also worked as the chief information commissioner.
Sadeka Halim’s father Fazlul Halim Chowdhury served as the Dhaka University vice-chancellor from 1976 to 1983. She got first classes in both Honours and Master’s in Social Science from Dhaka University.
She joined the Faculty of Social Science at Dhaka University as a lecturer in 1988. Then she did her second Master’s and PhD degrees from McGill University of Canada under Commonwealth scholarship. Sadeka Halim served as the Chief Information Commissioner from 2009 to 2014. Earlier, she was a Dhaka University senate member from 2004 to 2009.
