Primary teachers to continue work abstention despite ministry assurance

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

Government primary school teachers have decided to continue their work abstention and sit-in programme across the country, despite assurances from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.

The decision came late Sunday night after a meeting between the ministry and leaders of agitating teachers at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.

Teacher leaders said the programmes would continue until a final decision is made by the Ministry of Finance, although the education ministry had assured them of accepting their demands.

Earlier in the evening, the teachers had temporarily suspended the work abstention but maintained their sit-in programme following the meeting chaired by Abu Taher Md Masud Rana of the ministry.

After the meeting, Bangladesh Primary Teachers’ Association (Shahin-Lipi) General Secretary Khairun Nahar Lipi told reporters around 9:30pm that another meeting with the finance ministry was scheduled for Monday evening. Until then, she said, the work abstention would remain suspended, but the sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar would continue.

However, at around 11:00pm, a post on the Assistant Teachers of GPS BD Facebook group quoted Khairun Nahar Lipi as saying that the decision had been changed and that both the sit-in and class boycott programmes would continue
