A Dhaka court has granted bail to Kazi Zia Uddin Baset, an immediate past joint-secretary of the central executive committee of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and a student of the finance department of Jagannath University, in a case involving firearms and explosions.

On Monday (April 29), the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court approved his bail. Baset’s lawyer Kazi Ahsan Habib Asif informed that the court accepted the bail application.

On the same day, Baset, who has been in custody for the past seven months, alleged that he had been subjected to inhumane torture.

Baset said, “On the night of October 17, a group in plain clothes forcibly took me to a microbus near the BNP central office in Nayapaltan. Later, they staged a drama of my arrest with firearms and explosives from Hotel Marina, portraying me as a criminal. I have been subjected to ruthless torture only for my association with the student wing of BNP.”

Meanwhile, various leaders and activists of different units of JCD have been asserting their demand for Baset’s release for a long time.
